TRANSPORTATION Getting
there & away
Air
Granada has its own airport (Chauchina de la Vega)
which is located 12 km away from the city center
that can be connected via domestic connecting
flights by Aviaco from Madrid, Barcelona, Mallorca
and Tenerife. Once you arrive at the airport, there
is a bus service from the airport to the city center
which stops at la Caleta, Gran Vía, Fuente de las
Batallas (in front of the store El Corte Inglés).
Alternatively, you can also fly to Málaga's Costa
del Sol International Airport which is the closest
to Granada and then take a 1 and a half hour bus
service to Granada. There are buses departing from
Málaga's bus station every hour from 7 am until 9 pm
and the fare is about 9 €.
Train
Granada's railway station is on one end of the
historic quarter in Avenida de Andaluces which is
1.5 km west of the center. The city is not on the
RENFE's high speed AVE line, but there are regional
as well as long-distance trains serving its station.
For train schedule or online train booking, check
out RENFE's website at http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html.
The Talgo train takes about 6 hours from Madrid and
4 hours from Seville. Another alternative is to take
the Talgo 200-High Speed Train from Madrid to Málaga
and then take a bus to Granada as the whole journey
can be completed in 4 hours. If you are coming from
France, it may be worth getting a France 'n Spain
pass from Eurail which offers unlimited travel
throughout France and Spain under a specific time
period.
Bus
Granada's bus station is at Carretera de Jaén s/n,
the continuation of Avenida de Madrid, 3 km
northwest of the center. There is an excellent
transport network which links it to Andalucía and
the rest of Spain. The main bus company in Andalucía
is Alsina Graells. From Madrid, you can take the 5
hours bus to Granada and the ticket generally costs
less than 20 €.
Car
If you plan to drive to Granada from Madrid, exit
Madrid via the E-5 highway and then switch to the
N-323. The journey takes approximately 5 hours. From
Córdoba and Badajoz, take the N-432 road. From
Seville and Málaga, take the A-92 westward.
Getting around
There is a good bus service throughout Granada, and
normally you do not have to wait longer than 15
minutes to catch a bus. There is also a frequent,
air-conditioned minibus service connecting Albaicín
and the Alhambra together which makes it very
convenient for visitors who would like to visit both
Moorish quarters. Taxis are also plenty in Granada
and can be flagged down on any street. |
