Alhambra and Generalife
Granada's Alhambra is world famous as the most
striking relics of Arab art in the world. Perching
on a hill top, Alhambra is an arabic term meaning
"red castle". The oldest part of the Alhambra was
built by the founder of the Nazari dynasty in the
9th century. Next to the Alhambra is the Generalife,
the Nazarite kings' summer residence lavishly
adorned with fountains and pools in one of the
world's most exquisite gardens.
Albaicín
Located across from the Alhambra, this site has been
declared a UNESCO World Heritage along with the
former. The district is populated by white-washed
houses and narrow winding streets laden with cobble
stones. As it sits on a hill, the scenery from here
is stunning, and it's a great place to relax in one
of the friendly restaurants or tapas bars as well.
Cathedral
Granada's cathedral is located near Gran Vía in the
city center and is considered the first Renaissance
cathedral in the country. The Renaissance influence
can be appreciated in the main chapel with its
Corinthian columns and entablature with reliefs.
Statues of the twelve apostles and other saints are
found on the shelves attached to the columns.
Capilla Real
The Royal Chapel is another important landmark of
Granada. This brilliant piece of 16the century
Gothic architecture was built to house the tombs of
Isabel and Fernando who united Spain for Christendom
in 1492. The chapel also has a museum dedicated to a
collection of medieval Flemish paintings such as
Botticelli and Berruguete originally owned by Queen
Isabel.
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias
This basilica is where Granada's patron saint, la
Virgen de las Angustias, is worshipped. The baroque
façade with its Corinthian columns and vaulted niche
holding the Virgin Mary embracing the body of Christ
in particular is absolutely flawless. The basilica
boasts many other fine features including the
imposing twin towers dating from the 17th century as
well as the 18th century Churrigueresque style
marble altarpiece.
Iglesia de San Juan de Dios
Dedicated to San Juan de Dios, this fabulous baroque
church is located on the way along the road of the
same name. The 16th century saint was admired by the
locals for his devotion to care for the sick. The
church houses a silver urn which contains his
remains as well as an interesting collection of 17th
century sculptures and paintings. |
